CANADA (QUÉBEC) On septembre 2003, a Réserve de biodiversité (Conservation area) was created in the area of the low hills around lake Guernesé. The name, lac Guernesé, is probably due to the presence of a great number of Jerseymen the area, at one time. They migrated to the North Shore and settled as far north as Blanc-Sablon, located just below the Conservation area. Fishermen from the Channel Islands, especially Jersey, came to this village to fish every summer. It was historically a major fishing port. Around 1780, De Quetteville, a fishing company, made Blanc-Sablon their headquarters in the region and stayed for nearly a century. Their activities concentrated around cod fishing, and they would go back home to Jersey each fall. In 1817, people came lo live permanently from Québec city, New Brunswick's Acadie and Jersey Island.
