Mrs. Le Sauteur's respectable manners (1863)

Extracts from the Journal of Rev. W.B. Bateman
who bought Longueville Manor in 1863
and put on record the past happenings of the meadow
below the Manor.

"He states that a Mr Burrard owned the manor but left an agent, a Mr Pipon to look after his affairs. One day Mr.Pipon sold off the meadows, much to the annoyance of Mr Burrard who was living in London. Mr Burrard came back to Jersey and attempted to retrieve the meadows, but he was too late, the contracts were passed. He was so set in getting them back that he even took the new owner to Court, but he lost. The new owner became the avowed enemy of Burrard and to annoy him as much as possible he put up three of the greatest nuisances he could think of ---- A Tanyard, a Blacksmith shop, and a Public House. By 1863, the Tanyard and the Forge had gone but the Inn was still there, but "Mrs. Le Sauteur conducts it in a most quiet and respectable manner --- and is a kind and friendly neighbour to us all."
